How to reduce the size of a PDF file? - manual

PDF is one of the most popular file extensions. This is all due to its versatility and reliability. A file sent in PDF format guarantees that the recipient will read the data, graphics, reports, etc. in exactly the way you put them there. On top of that, most editing tools, though not only, nowadays allow you to export the results of your work precisely to PDF. However, the disadvantage of such exported files is their size, which is often considerable. That's why in this tutorial we suggest how to reduce the size of a PDF file.

Why are PDF files sometimes so large?

One of the advantages of PDF peaks is the ability to specify the accuracy of the saved documents. So you can set the quality required for printing, but also for digital use only. The latter takes up considerably less space.

Unfortunately, PDF files often end up in our hands, or rather on our disks, in printers' versions or misaligned, by people who don't know much about it. People inexperienced in creating PDF files often choose a higher quality than what is actually needed.

Are PDF shrinking tools expensive?

Changing the size of a PDF file for a professional is not a problem. Such a person uses tools such as Acrobat PRO on a daily basis, which allow not only editing, but also saving lighter versions of various PDF files. Most people, however, do not need such specialized and expensive tools.

Fortunately, there are a wide range of free programs on the market that may not allow advanced editing of a PDF file, but they can easily handle its compression. You can also shrink PDF files online, also for free.

How to reduce the size of a .PDF file?

Changing the file size only occasionally, there is no point in investing in expensive tools. What's more, you don't even need to install special software. The easiest way is to use one of the many sites containing an online PDF compression tool. Such a tool on its site also has Adobe, the company that created the file format. Importantly, the online version is completely free.

The file converter on Adobe's website is very simple. You load the file you want to reduce in size into the tool, and then select one of three options: high, medium or low compression. The higher the compression we choose, the smaller the file we get from the tool. When the online converter finishes its work a link will appear on the screen, clicking on it will download the reduced document.

You can find many such sites on the Internet, but you need to be vigilant, especially if you expect high compression. Converting a PDF to a very small file size may require registration and even incur various fees.

The PDF file can also be converted on a cell phone, for this you need to download one of the many applications available, most of them free. They are often the equivalent of converters available online from your computer.

What should I pay attention to when reducing a PDF file?

Converting PDF files makes it easier to transfer and archive data. However, it can cause unpleasant surprises. High compression for images sewn into the file can make them unreadable. It's not always worth using the highest compression options, and it's a good idea to check that all graphics remain readable before deleting the original file.
