What to look for when buying a monitor?

Buying a monitor, contrary to appearances, is not easy, which is due to the fact that there are many models available for sale with different parameters. So what to pay attention to when buying a monitor? The answer to this question is provided in this article.

Choosing a monitor - diagonal

One of the most important parameters of monitors is their size, which is expressed in inches as the length of the diagonal. It might seem that the larger the monitor the better, but it is worth being aware that this is not true. After all, the size of the monitor should be matched to the amount of space in the room and the distance that will separate the user from the screen. Indeed, it is worth remembering that it should not be less than 50 centimeters. It is also important to be able to grasp the entire screen with your eyes without having to move your head. This is because it translates into comfort of use and avoids fatigue. As a result, for basic applications, as a rule, the following are sufficient. monitors With a diagonal of 19, 20, or 24 inches.

Monitor resolution

When choosing a monitor, it is also worth considering its resolution, which is especially important for those involved in graphics or multimedia processing. This is because it is a parameter that reflects the detail of the displayed image. Monitors available for sale today can have a resolution:

  • Full HD (1920×1080 pixels). - which is the most common resolution, and is generally available for monitors under 25 inches. It is perfect for everyday use, i.e. office work, browsing the Internet or watching movies;
  • QHD (2560×1440 pixels) - which is a resolution for more demanding users that provides a larger working space and guarantees better image detail. It is generally used in monitors over 27 inches;
  • 4K Ultra HD (3180×2160 pixels). - which is the highest resolution, dedicated primarily to graphic designers and professional gamers. This is because it not only guarantees the most detailed image, but also provides a huge working space.

Types of matrices in monitors

When buying a monitor, it is also worth paying attention to the type of matrix used in a particular model. This is because currently on sale monitors are offered with matrices:

  • TN, which are used in cheaper monitors. This translates into lower image quality and narrow viewing angles compared to competing matrices;
  • IPS, which are perfect for multimedia processing or watching movies. This is due to excellent color reproduction (except for black) and wide viewing angles both vertically and horizontally;
  • VA (MVA and PVA), which have the advantage of high contrast and high image detail. Image quality in this case is better than in TN matrices, but slightly worse than in IPS matrices.

In conclusion, it should be said that when buying a monitor, the main focus should be on its parameters. You can read more information in this regard in the article: Which monitor to choose? A buying guide
